Many Elizabethans believed in the occult, magic and astrology. A ‘known’ fear being far easier to cope with than an ‘unknown’ one. Unusual or dangerous circumstances create stress and fear in the people who witness it, that is why many Elizabethans as indeed before this time attributed these happenings to the all-powerful God, as something they could relate to. In the play we can see that storms and miserable weather are associated with bad luck and evil happenings. It was impossible for the people to have come up with reasonable explanations of what was going on instead they likened common occurrences with one another. Elizabethans, with low levels of technology, developed their own beliefs. For example, the play opens with the three Witches this would let the audience immediately know that evil was present. ‘Macbeth’ contains many supernatural occurrences throughout the play which would have signified many things to the audience at that period in time. The supernatural is a manifesting phenomena, which is not explicable by natural or physical laws. It does not store any personal data.Superstition is the belief in the existence or power of the supernatural. In Act IV, a doctor spies on Lady Macbeth while she is praying. The Thane of Cawdor is pardoned by King Duncan. The witches tell Banquo that he will be king, but he will not father kings. Is the Thane of Cawdor pardoned by Duncan? After a battle in Scotland, Macbeth and his friend Banquo meet three witches, who make three prophecies – Macbeth will be a thane, Macbeth will be king and Banquo’s sons will be kings. Here’s a quick overview of what happens in the play. These apparitions instruct Macbeth to beware Macduff but reassure him that no man born of woman can harm him and that he will not be overthrown until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane. In response they summon for him three apparitions: an armed head, a bloody child, and finally a child crowned, with a tree in his hand. He informs Macbeth that two or three men have come by with the news that Macduff has fled to England. Why does the third prophecy give him so much confidence? Macbeth is confident with the third prophecy because he thinks it will never come true 3. Why does the third prophecy give Macbeth so much confidence? The third apparition is “a Child Crowned, with a tree in his hand,” which tells Macbeth that he will not be defeated “until Great Birnam Wood… shall come against him” (93). The second apparition is “a Bloody Child,” and Macbeth feels empowered when he is told that “none of woman born” (80) can hurt him. What appearance does the third apparition take? Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane hill. It declares: Macbeth shall never vanquish’d be until. The third apparition is that of a child wearing a crown and holding a tree. What does the third apparition mean by this statement? This fourth vision reveals a line of kings that do not at all resemble him. Macbeth hearing this becomes confident that his crown is secure until the fourth vision is revealed. The final apparition tells him that he will not be defeated until the trees at Birnam Wood move to the castle.
